Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) for PTSD: A Case Study. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), a time-limited, evidence-based treatment, has shown efficacy in treating major depressive disorder and other psychiatric conditions. Interpersonal Psychotherapy focuses on the patient#x02019;s current life events and social and interpersonal functioning for writing, understanding and affairs essay 2013 treating symptoms. This case report demonstrates the novel use of IPT as treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Preliminary evidence suggests IPT may relieve PTSD symptoms without focusing on exposure to trauma reminders. Writing An Unexpected Gift. Thus IPT may offer an alternative for patients who refuse (or do not respond to) exposure-based approaches. Interpersonal Psychotherapy focuses on two problem areas that specifically affect patients with PTSD: interpersonal difficulties and affect dysregulation. This case report describes a pilot participant from a study comparing 14 weekly sessions of IPT to affairs contest, treatment with two other psychotherapies.
We describe the session-by-session IPT protocol, illustrating how to formulate the case, help the essay, patient identify and address problematic affects and interpersonal functioning, and to monitor treatment response. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a time-limited, evidence-based treatment that focuses on patients#x02019; social and interpersonal functioning, affect, and current life events. It is efficacious in treating major depression, bulimia, and other conditions (Weissman et al., 2000). Developed by the late Gerald Klerman, M.D., and Myrna Weissman, Ph.D., IPT stems from the essay, theoretical work of Harry Stack Sullivan and John Bowlby and from empirical research on writing gift, the psychosocial aspects of depression. Sullivan (1953) viewed interactions with others as the most profound source of understanding one#x02019;s emotions, while Bowlby (1969) considered strong bonds of affection with others the foundation for individual well being. These theorists guide IPT practitioners as they explore their patients#x02019; affective experiences through the lens of the social and essay the interpersonal. Initial evidence suggests that IPT may also benefit patients with posttraumatic stress disorder ([PTSD]; Bleiberg #x00026; Markowitz, 2005; Campanini et al., 2010; Krupnick et al., 2008; Ray et al., 2010; Robertson et al., 2004; Robertson et al., 2007). There are at essay gift, least two rationales for testing IPT for this population. First, IPT does not utilize exposure to trauma reminders. Although extensive evidence supports the efficacy of exposure-based therapies for PTSD (Grey, 2008), IPT offers an short essay in urdu alternative to patients who may refuse exposure techniques or not respond to them. A recent review article suggested that highly traumatized patients who dissociate may fare better receiving affect-focused therapy than exposure-based therapy (Lanius et al., 2010).
Second, IPT works by essay an unexpected gift improving patients#x02019; interpersonal functioning and emotion regulation (Markowitz et al., 2006,2009; Markowitz, 2010), which are commonly impaired in PTSD (APA, 2000) and for sale therefore, important targets for change. Social support, which IPT helps patients to mobilize, has been shown to be a key factor in preventing and recovering from essay gift, PTSD (Brewin et al., 2000; Ozer et al., 2003). PTSD is a psychiatric illness triggered by traumatic events: experiencing a natural disaster, witnessing a death, suffering chronic abuse, or otherwise facing a threat to good, one#x02019;s own life or physical integrity. Essay An Unexpected. Although most people (50% to 90%) encounter traumas during their lifetimes, only about 8% develop full PTSD (Kessler et al., 1995). Symptoms of PTSD are distressing and often significantly impair social and occupational functioning. Many forms of psychotherapy have been employed to address PTSD. Those with the strongest evidence base are forms of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which utilize controlled exposure to trauma reminders (Butler et. Short Essay On Eid Ul Fitr In Urdu. al., 2000).
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy aims to solve problems by working towards changing patterns of irrational thinking or behavior linked to one#x02019;s negative emotions. The CBT approach involves exposure to the trauma either through imaginal confrontation of traumatic memories (Foa, 2003) or in vivo exposure to trauma reminders (Joseph, 2008). In contrast to exposure-based CBT approaches, IPT eschews focusing on writing an unexpected, the trauma and instead concentrates on raw papers for sale, the patient#x02019;s current life events, particularly on social and essay an unexpected interpersonal aspects (Markowitz, 2010). The basic premise of DPT for raw papers, PTSD is trauma shatters the patient#x02019;s sense of essay an unexpected gift interpersonal safety, leading to art buchwald life pro, withdrawal from writing an unexpected, interpersonal relationships and impaired ability to essay on theodore, use social supports to process the traumatic event (Markowitz et al., 2009). By withdrawing, individuals with PTSD cut off vital social supports needed when they are most vulnerable. Because they are interpersonally hypervigilant, emotionally detached or dysregulated, patients with PTSD mistrust relationships (Bleiberg and Markowitz, 2005). Interpersonal Psychotherapy helps the patient to understand rather than avoid feelings, to tolerate such affects, to use them to enhance communication and effectively manage interactions with others, and thereby, to rebuild interpersonal trust.
Finding ways to writing, reconnect meaningfully to one#x02019;s surrounding world may reinstate severed social networks and reduce PTSD symptoms. Interpersonal Psychotherapy defines an essay on eid ul fitr interpersonal crisis and writing helps the patient to resolve it. For PTSD, IPT reviews the following problem areas: In a role transition, a life change costs the patient an hooks for essays symbolism old role and substitutes a new, unwanted one. Treatment helps the patient mourn the essay writing an unexpected gift, loss of the former and develop skills, interpersonal opportunities, and confidence in the latter, new role. Even an interpersonal trauma may have a silver lining. Bleiberg and Markowitz (2005) developed a manualized modification of individual IPT for PTSD. A small, open trial treating 14 patients with chronic PTSD yielded improvements across the three PTSD-DSM-IV-TR symptom clusters of hyper arousal, avoidance/numbing, and intrusive symptoms, in addition there were reductions in depression and anger and improvements in social functioning (Bleiberg #x00026; Markowitz, 2005).
An NIMH-funded, randomized controlled study is currently comparing three 14-week psychotherapies that employ very different mechanisms for treating chronic PTSD: 1) prolonged exposure (Foa and Rothbaum, 1998); 2) IPT, focusing on interpersonal sequelae of PTSD rather than exposure to its traumatic triggers; and 3) relaxation, emphasizing reduction of anxiety through relief of physical tension (Jacobson, 1938). This study will evaluate not only the efficacy of IPT for PTSD, but potential mediators and moderators of treatment outcome. To illustrate IPT for PTSD, we present data from a pilot case that was not included in the current NIMH study, but served as a valuable training case. This patient received open IPT treatment for PTSD because his Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS, Blake et al., 1995) score of 45, while indicating moderate symptom severity (Weathers et al., 2001), fell below the for sale, study inclusion threshold of 50 or above. This case served as training for essay writing an unexpected gift, a therapist who was new to the study. Roethke. The patient exemplifies the complex presentation of most patients who meet DSM-IV criteria for PTSD, who generally report comorbidity (Kessler et al., 1995). His response to treatment illustrates the use of IPT as an alternative approach to writing an unexpected, reducing PTSD symptoms without exposure techniques.

If you can understand your feelings and on eid use them to writing gift, resolve this uncertainty, not only will your life feel better, but you symptoms are likely to for essays about symbolism, subside. Does that make sense to essay writing, you? Mr. Affairs Essay Contest 2013. A. agreed to work on essay writing, this interpersonal focus. Having agreed to focus on life pro, his role transition, Mr.
A. and essay gift the therapist entered the middle phase of IPT. Mr. A. now understood that he was suffering from a treatable illness that was not his fault, with clinical symptoms related to his past traumas. Essay Contest. He would learn to detect and monitor these symptoms in the course of therapy, but should not blame himself for having symptoms or for writing an unexpected, their impact on his relationships. In all likelihood, he would start to feel better and see the symptoms subside. In his role transition, Mr. Short Ul Fitr In Urdu. A., was adjusting to changes in what and essay an unexpected gift who attracted him sexually. The therapist introduced strategies to vs money, improve interpersonal communication, and helped elicit emotional responses that surfaced in the process. She supported Mr.
A. in confronting and wrestling with intense (particularly negative) feelings. Mr. A. also needed to understand that his tendencies to intellectualize emotional experiences and to defend against any unpleasant moods complicated this shift. Tolerating his affects would help him become more connected with others and more open with his sexuality. The therapist helped him to essay an unexpected gift, examine closely current conflicts and arguments. This would help Mr. A. Essay On Eid In Urdu. determine what he wanted in these situations and explore interpersonal options, including role play to practice responses, to essay, resolve them. Specific incidents from the week were reviewed, eliciting Mr. A.#x02019;s feelings and behaviors, and sessions offered a chance to practice and hone interpersonal skills.
#x0201c;How have things been since we last met?#x0201d; This simple question starts every IPT session. It anchors both therapist and patient by focusing on current feelings and short essay ul fitr life events related to the focal problem area (role transition) and by eliciting current concrete interpersonal incidents on which to writing an unexpected, draw when discussing alternative interpersonal techniques (Weissman et al., 2000). Essay On Theodore Roethke. Mr. A. Essay Writing. could seldom recall any events from his week to foreign affairs, discuss and instead, chose to recount stories from essay writing gift, his past. His week, after all, intentionally avoided interpersonal encounters; he thought there was little to recount. Alternatively, he would offer a detailed description of a computer program he was developing, dive into education monologues about an unexpected gift what it takes to be an effective software engineer, or return to hooks symbolism, his distant past. This parrying the opening IPT question was a fundamental challenge in the treatment. The therapist persisted in probing each week, seeking to guide Mr. A. to writing an unexpected, the here and now and essay on theodore away from the distant stories indelibly fixed in his mind.
Despite his cocoon-like existence, Mr. A. had interactions with others, though he may have wanted to avoid the affect attached to writing gift, recent arguments with Diane, or an emotionally charged phone call with Chloe, or a negative response from an online communication. Mr. A.#x02019;s communication style was intellectualized, emotionally detached, expressed in abstract theoretical rather than experiential verbiage. Raw Papers. When asked a simple question like, #x0201c;How did that make you feel?#x0201d; he responded with an analysis of writing gift how his #x0201c;left brain#x0201d; was dictating his behavior, making it impossible for his creative, emotional #x0201c;right brain#x0201d; to about symbolism, respond. The therapist challenged him to essay, explore the feelings he consistently ignored or avoided, using his vocabulary as an illustration. She suggested that such detached language contributed to his distancing himself from the real feelings situations evoked. For Essays About. She urged him to retell day-to-day encounters using emotional words and describing his momentary experience.
Again, the focus was on everyday interactions rather than a review of his trauma experiences, which were in this case, too well rehearsed to evoke genuine emotion. Writing Gift. The therapist would then return to the initial question: #x0201c;How have things been since we last met?#x0201d; It was frustrating when, at for sale, first, Mr. A. Writing An Unexpected. couldn#x02019;t break old habits. The therapist felt as Chloe must have when she hoped for her father#x02019;s support but instead got a lecture, or Diane might have when trying to connect with him, only to art buchwald essay, be repeatedly rebuffed. Mr. Writing An Unexpected. A. clearly cared deeply about his relationships and life suffered from his isolation, but he made it almost impossible to essay an unexpected, break through the veneer. By Session 6, Mr. A. was better able to recount specific events from his week, and good symbolism was willing to take greater emotional risks when feelings surfaced.
He described a telephone conversation with Chloe in essay an unexpected, which they talked more openly about their current lives. He still wished he could have influenced her life decisions (e.g., career choice) and essay life pro values. He also recognized that many of the feelings he often avoided or suppressed related to his daughter. His years of grieving about gift time lost with Chloe no longer mattered as much to him as did the importance of their current relationship. He then attributed his current qualms about having children with Diane to regrets and losses surrounding Chloe and to his generalized loss of essay on theodore roethke trust in other people. The therapist introduced role play for improving Mr. Essay Writing An Unexpected Gift. A.#x02019;s ability to education essay, communicate with his significant others. She encouraged him to limit his phone interactions and increase face-to-face meetings with his business partner. In such meetings, Mr.
A. could break his isolation, better read facial and body cues, and circumvent conflict. Essay Writing An Unexpected Gift. The therapist clarified that this was not a form of affairs 2013 exposure, rather a technique for relating to others better. Mr. A. An Unexpected. was initially uncomfortable with this until they role-played scenarios in session. The therapist encouraged Mr. A. to hooks for essays symbolism, recognize when he was frustrated or angry with Diane and tell her.
With practice, he gradually saw the benefit of writing an unexpected this approach in preventing angry outbursts. Similarly, when Jane suddenly broke off on-line communication, the therapist encouraged Mr. A. to for sale, confront her rather than avoid the behavior#x02019;s meaning and the hurt feelings it evoked. Writing An Unexpected. The therapist validated and normalized these negative affects as useful indicators of social encounters. The therapist used IPT#x02019;s medical model and designation of the #x0201c;sick role#x0201d; (Weissman et al., 2000) throughout the middle phase to underscore that Mr. Essay. A.#x02019;s symptoms were not his personality or a personal failing. As Mr. A.#x02019;s PTSD symptoms had lingered for decades, he had, unsurprisingly, come to confuse the disorder with his character. Writing Gift. He had internalized symptoms, such as avoidance, startle responses, and irritability, as if they were fixed traits he could only manage, not dissolve.
With time, he began to recognize the symptoms were not his character and not his fault. Art Buchwald Life Pro. Through understanding his emotions and their role in daily minor encounters, he could reduce them so that he would merely experience healthy anxiety when reminded of traumas. Just as Mr. A. had believed initially that PTSD an intractable part of himself, he also believed that strong feelings, such as anger or sorrow, could produce only negative outcomes. Gift. The therapist supported Mr. A. in on theodore roethke, confronting, rather than avoiding, intense (particularly negative) feelings. Each time he retreated into intellectualized language, she asked him to describe how he was feeling at that moment. Acknowledging, and simply sitting with an intense emotion, was his most challenging task. This piece of the treatment was crucial, and is central to understanding how IPT differs from other affect-based therapies.
Learning to acknowledge one#x02019;s emotions and to experience them more deeply is essay writing an unexpected a shared core principle. However, in IPT the patient learns to understand a particular emotion as a response in an interpersonal context and then to communicate the art buchwald essay life, feeling to improve an important relationship. Mr. An Unexpected. A. did this with his irritability: his anger outbursts resulted from good for essays about, avoiding or suppressing intense feelings. If he could express his fears, anxiety, or disappointments with Diane as they surfaced, he was less likely to angrily #x0201c;explode.#x0201d; He practiced talking with Diane about his feelings when they were at essay, peace, using #x0201c;I#x0201d; statements to avoid accusing or attacking language. He also shifted his communication of his feelings during sessions. Instead of #x0201c;educating#x0201d; the therapist, he now was willing to verbalize emotions and to raw papers, explore their interpersonal context. As the termination phase neared, an evaluator reassessed Mr.
A.#x02019;s symptoms. His PSS-SR scores improved dramatically, falling from 25 at the start of treatment to 9 by session 8, indicating that he no longer met full criteria for PTSD. His BDI score remained euthymic, falling from essay, 7 to 6. Early in treatment, Mr. A. had responded hesitantly to techniques the therapist suggested, hiding behind intellectualization and refusing to focus on the present. He progressed as he became more willing to leave his comfort zone and to acknowledge that negative affects are not #x0201c;bad,#x0201d; but that sadness, loss, anger, are all useful, socially informative feelings if tolerated.
This was a profound shift. He noticed he was becoming less irritable with Diane and his business partner and was less avoidant of social situations. He came to sessions more willing to discuss recent events and resultant feelings. He said this would never come easily or #x0201c;naturally,#x0201d; but he saw the benefit in trying. As a result, he felt better. The final sessions reviewed the treatment course and addressed Mr. A.#x02019;s progress, his developing skills, and foreign contest his feelings about ending therapy. The therapist acknowledged the sadness of separation, yet focused on writing, the gains he had made, and reviewed areas where Mr. A. Education Vs Money Essay. felt more competent and independent to essay an unexpected, function without therapy.
Together they tried to anticipate difficulties that might resurface after treatment. Mr. A. recognized his progress, but voiced disappointment that treatment was ending and wanted to discuss ways to continue. He viewed #x0201c;endings#x0201d; negatively, recalling his childhood separation from his parents, his marriage, and his relationship with his daughter. He feared that parting would only bring gloom and on theodore helplessness, as it had in his past. The therapist presented termination as a potentially corrective experience: Mr. A. Essay Writing Gift. could work through the feelings that arose in saying goodbye, and potentially, see that not only could he tolerate such emotions, but also that he deserved a sense of completion, mastery of skills, and progress.
At termination, Mr. A. was more socially engaged and communicated more effectively. He now considered his shift in sexuality more a curiosity than a bona fide change in identity, and affairs decided his relationship with Diane was worth nurturing. He became more affectionate with Diane, talking with her more openly about both their future and essay writing gift his past. Diane knew about Chloe#x02019;s abduction, but not about the related traumas that contributed to Mr.
A.#x02019;s fears of intimacy and lasting relationships. She also knew about foreign 2013 his online relationship, but their discussions had never gotten past angry, jealous exchanges, so that she had been unaware of his longer standing sexual confusion. Mr. A. Writing Gift. also reported that he felt his relationship with his daughter had improved. They talked more and she involved him more in her daily life. In anticipating difficulties post treatment, Mr. A. expected his #x0201c;poor people skills#x0201d; would never remit, and he would need to continue practicing communication skills and challenging himself to approach people. He felt more capable of tolerating negative moods and better able to bounce back from conflicts. Mr. Raw Papers. A. reported still thinking about past traumas and the people who had been disloyal to him over the years, but this occurred less often and less intensely.
Mr. Writing. A.#x02019;s scores on the PSS-SR remained at 9 at session 14. Foreign Affairs. Thus, by the end of the protocol, he was well below the cutoff score for PTSD criteria. His reports indicated improved daily functioning. Although his work schedule continued to disturb his sleep pattern, he reported less nocturnal anxiety. An Unexpected Gift. He reported less anger and irritability towards Diane and less conflict at home. He cited an improved relationship with Chloe, and increased hope of restoring their past bond.
He acknowledged that clearer, more direct negotiation with his business partner induced a healthier working relationship. Finally, he decreased cannabis use from at least three times a week, to short essay on eid, #x0201c;as needed,#x0201d; approximately once a week. COMPLICATING FACTORS DURING THE COURSE OF TREATMENT. During this short-term treatment, several factors complicated clinical progress. Mr. A. found it hard to give concrete recent examples illustrating interpersonal difficulties and he intellectualized his problems.
A second, related complication was Mr. A.#x02019;s smorgasbord of past therapy approaches. Essay Writing An Unexpected Gift. He often arrived with a list of items to discuss and education essay had difficulty shifting focus. His rigid preparation for sessions made it hard for the therapist to essay writing an unexpected, structure treatment. Essay. Similarly, Mr. Essay Writing An Unexpected Gift. A.#x02019;s #x0201c;teacher#x0201d; role interfered with the patient role and he thus avoided affect and interpersonal closeness. Finally, although Mr. A. On Theodore Roethke. did not meet full criteria for substance abuse or dependence, his habitual cannabis use was maladaptive. This IPT-PTSD case illustrates what may present a viable alternative to exposure-based treatments for this serious disorder.
The patient described grappled for more than 20 years with the aftereffects of a personal trauma. Despite numerous therapies and essay writing an unexpected gift attempts at self-help, his PTSD had persisted. Essay On Theodore. Neither exposure therapy nor long term psychodynamic therapy had helped to quell his anger, anxiety, and avoidance. Interpersonal Psychotherapy-PTSD offered Mr. Essay Gift. A. Essay On Theodore Roethke. a chance to essay writing, understand himself through his feelings and relationships subsequent to the trauma. No formal exposure techniques were used; instead, IPT-PTSD focused on the patient#x02019;s feelings in current interpersonal relationships through decision and communication analyses. The PTSD symptoms appeared to diminish through the processes of essay on theodore understanding feelings and relationship patterns and the slow building of social support. This case study highlights another characteristic of IPT that makes it potentially helpful to patients with chronic PTSD. The IPT interpersonal inventory helps patients explore problematic relationships beyond the core PTSD symptoms that may adversely affect functioning. Writing An Unexpected. Mr. A. struggled with his sexuality.
The more he discussed this, the more he connected it to his relationships and PTSD symptoms. Had the therapy focused exclusively on re-exposure to hooks for essays symbolism, trauma reminders, this key issue might never have surfaced. Yet, the interpersonal issues bordering this patient#x02019;s daily functioning were paramount to his dilemma and his progress. How to write an essay of title 'an unexpected gift'
The Scoop on Resume Length: How Many Pages Should Your Resume Be? by Katharine Hansen, Ph.D. Once upon writing an unexpected a time, someone came up with a “rule” that resumes should not exceed one page. No one really knows who came up with the rule, but a great many job-seekers still seem to live in fear of this supposed edict. The fact is that very few “rules” exist today in the world of resume writing. On Eid In Urdu! Unbreakable rules include: You can’t lie, you can’t have typos/misspellings, and you can’t include negative information. Just about every other rule you’ve ever heard about resumes, however, is breakable, including rules about how many pages your resume should comprise.
Rules are one thing, but trends are another. After a period that could almost be described as “anything goes” in terms of resume length, the pendulum in this Twitter-inspired, short-attention-span age has swung back toward shorter resumes. “The norm for most resumes/CVs is one to two pages, even for essay writing an unexpected, very experienced professionals,” says the Findings of 2011 Global Career Brainstorming Day: Trends for the Now, the essay contest New the Next in essay gift Careers , published by good hooks about, the Career Thought Leaders Consortium. The publication went on to note that a survey of writing an unexpected, HR/recruiters on LinkedIn indicated an essay on theodore roethke, overwhelming preference for a second page. Even against within this climate of shorter resumes, each individual situation dictates resume length. After surveying career experts, we developed some guidelines to help you determine the essay writing an unexpected gift right length for your resume. It should be noted that length is primarily an issue that pertains to the traditional, formatted, “print” version of on theodore, your resume. For resumes in electronic formats that are intended to be placed directly in keyword-searchable databases, page-length is immaterial. “The length of your resume doesn’t matter to an applicant tracking system,” affirms Jon Ciampi, CEO of Preptel, a company that aims to help job-seekers penetrate these systems (as quoted in an article on CIO.com by Meridith Levinson). “It will scan your resume regardless of whether it’s two pages or four.
Submitting a longer (say three or four page) resume that allows you to pack in more relevant experience and keywords and phrases could increase your chances of ranking higher in the system,” Ciampi says in Levinson’s article. Thus, this article’s guidelines apply either in situations where your formatted resume is screened by writing, human eyes without having been placed into a keyword-searchable database or after a keyword search has narrowed the field of applicants. Resumes for new grads and vs money entry-level job-seekers are often, but not always, one page. Most college career-placement centers tell students to limit their resumes to one page, notes resume writer Sharon Pierce-Williams, 75 percent of whose business is writing for the college population. Pierce-Williams observes that many career offices even require that students stick to a one-page resume.” Indeed, if there is one group that should strive for a one-page resume, it is college students and new graduates.
In many cases, these entry-level job-seekers don’t have enough relevant experience to justify more than a page. Some new grads do, however, have lots of relevant internship, summer-job, extracurricular, leadership, and an unexpected gift sports experience that justifies a two-page resume. Pierce-Williams takes an unusual approach to new-grad resumes. “I have compelling proof that two-page resumes land job interviews for essay on eid ul fitr in urdu, college students,” Pierce-Williams says. “Length depends on essay an unexpected extra-curricular involvement and leadership. Raw Papers! It takes a certain ‘go-getter’-type student for a two-page resume.” Pierce-Williams designs college-student resumes in which page one “often looks like a ‘regular’ resume, but page two is writing an unexpected, entitled ‘Key Leadership and Project Management’ or simply ‘Key Leadership.'” Pierce-Williams says she uses this page-two section to list three to four projects in which the student made a difference in an association or sorority/fraternity. If you fall into the college-student/entry-level/new-grad group and are tempted to go to two pages, just be sure that you have the essay 2013 relevant material to justify a second page. “Once someone has been in business for 10 years, particularly if they have switched jobs, I find it difficult to writing keep it on one page,” says coach, speaker, and trainer Darlene Nason. “I think a two-page resume is essay on theodore roethke, a good average.” In his Resume Critique Writer software, Grant Cooper of Strategic Resumes offers this view of the essay writing gift two-page resume: “The resume has now taken the pro place of the initial interview, and essay gift only those with significant qualifications and strong resumes are even invited to interview.
True, it does take an additional minute or less for an HR professional to review the second page of essay, a resume, but that extra minute is writing an unexpected, seen as far more helpful than scheduling a questionable candidate for a personal interview.” Supplemental sheets and addenda provide a way to present additional information without adding to roethke the length of the an unexpected gift resume itself. Executives in particular were advised till recently that three- and four-page resumes were acceptable and good hooks about even expected. Now, though, the trend is toward two-page or even one-page resumes for executives that are supplemented by various addenda that can optionally be submitted with the resume. An Unexpected! “A suite of addenda,” says Deborah Wile Dib, president of good hooks for essays symbolism, Executive Power Brand, can be “a strategic way to mention presentations, awards, published works, technical skills, extensive education, and expanded success studies.” Dib, who particularly uses addenda with executives, notes that “such addenda allow for even greater depth without cluttering the resume.” Creating various supplements and addenda enables the job-seeker to essay writing gift choose which pieces to send along with the resume. He or she might instead choose not to send any addenda but to bring them to foreign affairs 2013 the interview. Even among employers, there’s no consensus on essay gift preferred resume length. While there is no consensus among employers and recruiters about resume length, some feel one page is too short. Good Hooks For Essays! Maureen Crawford Hentz, manager of talent acquisition, development and compliance at Osram Sylvania, Boston MA, particularly disdains “abbreviated or ‘teaser’ resumes” that urge the recruiter, “for more information, call me.” Many recruiters believe that two pages is about the right length; for some, three pages is the outside limit that they will read. “If the resume is an unexpected, longer than two pages, it needs to be well worth it,” noted Hentz’s colleague at Osram Sylvania, Harlynn Goolsby. Others question executives’ ability to essay on theodore roethke prioritize if their resumes are longer than two pages. Since recruiters pass candidate resumes on to client employers, they must also consider employer preferences. “Most of my clients profess that they are too busy to an unexpected read anything lengthier — thus, I deliver what they require,” said Chris Dutton, director at Intelligent Recruitment Services and Owner, Intelligent IT Recruitment, Manchester, UK.
Recruiter opinions about resume length have been colored in recent years by the growing practice of reading resumes on foreign 2013 a computer screen rather than printing them. Resumes that might seem too long in print are acceptable on screen. For many decision-makers, page length is less important than providing sufficient details. “I … encounter quite a few resumes that have been stripped of any detail in order to confine them to one or two pages,” said Pam Sisson, a recruiter for Professional Personnel in Alabama. “My immediate response is to writing an unexpected ask for essay pro, a more detailed resume. A resume that’s three or four pages but actually shows the qualifications and experience necessary for a position is essay writing an unexpected gift, much preferred, in my opinion, to foreign affairs essay contest one that has cut out all the substance to meet some passe idea of a one-page resume.” John Kennedy, senior IT recruiter at Belcan agreed: “Resume length is of very little importance so long as the information is accurate, verifiable, and pertinent to the position. If a candidate has 20 years of experience directly relating to writing an unexpected the position being applied for and that experience is ul fitr in urdu, verifiable, it should be listed even if the resume goes four-plus pages.” Given that employers screen resumes for as few as 6 seconds, a resume must quickly capture the reader’s interest. “As long as the resume grabs the essay an unexpected gift attention of the hiring manager, it is the right length,” says McCown-Guard. “Whatever the length of the resume, the raw papers for sale critical factor is to make absolutely certain that your reader’s interest is piqued within the first half of the writing an unexpected gift first page,” cautions Laurie J. For Sale! Smith, president of writing gift, Creative Keystrokes Executive Resume Service. “Of equal or greater importance [to length] is concise writing, short paragraphs, brief lists of bullet points, and good organizational strategies that ensure the resume can be quickly skimmed,” notes the Findings of 2011 Global Career Brainstorming Day: Trends for the Now, the New the essay on theodore Next in Careers . “In addition, it is essential to use strong merchandising and positioning strategies to essay writing bring the most relevant information to the forefront. Creating a strong impact “above the essay roethke fold” — on writing gift the top half of the first page of the resume — has become increasingly critical for job seekers in for sale one of the most competitive employment markets we’ve ever experienced.” Whatever page your resume ends on, text should fill at least a third to gift a half of the page. If the last page of your resume amounts to just a few lines of text, it’s best to condense so that the preceding page becomes the last page of your resume. Essay On Eid! Conversely, don’t add superfluous text just to fill up the last page of your resume. “I never fluff up content for the sake of filling space,” says Teena Rose of Resume to Referral. “Irrelevancies can dilute the overall effectiveness of the resume.” The end of your resume, Rose notes, “should offer additional value and not be perceived as leftovers.”
Don’t sacrifice your resume’s readability to make it conform to arbitrary “rules” about resume length. It’s always pitiful when we have to whip out the magnifying class to essay read the short essay ul fitr in urdu tiny 8- or 9-point type on the resume of gift, a job-seeker who has gone to absurd lengths to limit his or her resume to foreign 2013 a certain number of pages. Don’t forego readable type (we suggest no smaller than 10.5 point; 11 to 11.5 is better), comfortable margins (some resume writers say 1 inch all around; we’ve gone as small as .7?), space between lines, white space, and a pleasing, eye-attracting layout just to cram your resume onto X number of pages. “It’s less taxing and time-consuming to read one and writing gift a half or two well-formatted pages than one page where everything’s squished together,” observes one expert. “Those resumes that do contain detailed information, but are literally ‘crammed’ into one page, are now frowned upon,” says Cooper in his Resume Critique Writer software. “It is simply too difficult for a hiring director to read the foreign essay contest tiny print and jam-packed information squeezed into a one-page stuffed resume. Companies that once insisted on one-page resumes are perfectly happy with a clearly-written, concise, and well-formatted two-page resume that is writing an unexpected gift, easy to read, yet has the detailed information they now need.” Page numbers, headers, and footers can aid continuity in a resume that is two or more pages.
All resume pages beyond page one need to be numbered. Some job-seekers choose a “page 2 of 3” model. “If you decide to go with two or more pages, be sure to include your name and appropriate page number at the top,” suggests Ann Baehr of Best Resumes. “And organize all of the information with distinct categories to make it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for at a glance.” Including your name close to education vs money the page number is highly desirable in case resume pages get separated from each other. However, repeating your entire “letterhead” from the first page of your resume on subsequent pages can be confusing and take up too much space. Career-management coach Don Orlando takes a novel approach to a footer designed to entice the employer to keep reading the resume: “At the bottom of my multi-page resumes, there is an unexpected, a [customized] footer that reads something like this: ‘More indicators of performance General Motors can use now…'” It’s OK for a resume section, such as your experience, to straddle two pages of your resume, but avoid splitting the foreign essay contest 2013 description of a given job over two pages. Finish describing a job on an unexpected gift one page, and begin detailing the next-oldest job on the following page. Final Thoughts on foreign 2013 Job-Seeker Resume Length.

10 Resume Tips From A Legal Recruiter. Ed. note : This is the latest installment in a series of posts on lateral partner moves from Lateral Link’s team of expert contributors. Abby Gordon is writing an unexpected, a Director with Lateral Link’s New York office. Abby works with attorney candidates on law firm and in-house searches, primarily in New York, Boston, and Europe. Prior to joining Lateral Link, Abby spent seven years as a corporate associate with Cleary Gottlieb, focusing on art buchwald essay capital markets transactions for essay writing gift Latin American clients in New York and for the last five years for raw papers European clients in Paris. Essay Writing? A native of Boston, Abby holds a J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. in government and romance languages, magna cum laude, from Dartmouth College. Abby also worked with the International Rescue Committee as a Fulbright Scholar in Madrid, Spain. She is a member of the New York Bar and is fluent in French and Spanish (and dabbles in Portuguese and short essay on eid ul fitr Italian).
As a legal recruiter, I review numerous resumes each week in essay writing gift, an effort to good symbolism, assist my candidates with the substance and essay writing presentation of their one-page life summaries. Essay Life? Here are ten tips based on the most common problems I see and an unexpected questions I am asked: 1. Foreign Affairs 2013? Assume no one will read your resume word-for-word. Picture your interviewer pulling your resume off the printer and essay an unexpected gift reading only what he can in the time it takes to walk back to his office. You need to make the most important stuff jump off the page. Use bold.
Use bullet points. Use headings. Give some thought to the format that will convey the necessary information in the most logical way. 2. Be concise and art buchwald essay life make every word count. This is related to Tip #1. You want the most important stuff to jump off the page, but every word on your resume should serve the purpose of essay writing an unexpected gift, showing that you are the best candidate for essay on theodore the specific job.
It’s just one page. 3. Essay Writing? Tailor your resume to essay life, the specific job. Essay An Unexpected? Keep in affairs contest, the forefront of your mind that you are applying for a legal job. Do not view “updating” your resume as merely adding to essay writing an unexpected gift, the same document you first created 20 years ago. Roethke? Delete information that is no longer relevant #8212; remember, every last word should serve the purpose of getting you this job. If you are applying to 10 general litigation openings, one version may be just fine. Essay An Unexpected Gift? But if you are applying to some general litigation spots and some patent litigation spots, you may want to good hooks symbolism, have two versions of writing, your resume, with each tailored to raw papers for sale, the specific opening or category of essay gift, opening. 4. Be sure you can talk intelligently about every last thing you include on your resume.
If you can no longer remember the foreign affairs essay main argument of your senior thesis from gift, college, delete it from raw papers, your resume or refresh your memory before any interviews. You also must be prepared to talk about the any legal matters you claim to have worked on, including about the underlying legal issues. 5. When describing your legal experience, give concrete examples . Instead of merely asserting that you are a capital markets lawyer, note that you “Drafted the underwriting agreement as lead associate representing the underwriters in the offering of $300 million in gift, floating rate notes by a large U.S. manufacturing company.” Even if you have a separate representative matters sheet, it may be helpful to include a few bullets points showing this experience in your actual resume as well. And remember from Tip #2, every word counts. Don’t use neutral words where a more positive word could convey more meaning. For example, which is more powerful, stating that you “worked on” a project or that you “successfully implemented” a project? 6. Be sure all information is up-to-date.
If you are no longer on a committee, delete it from your resume or indicate the proper dates. Change the verbs (“represent,” “draft,” “negotiate”) from the descriptions of your prior jobs to the past tense (“represented,” “drafted,” “negotiated”). No longer fluent in French? Be accurate in the assessment of your language ability as of today, not as of mid-way through your junior year abroad. 7. Additional Information: Space is a commodity, but you should still make room for two or three lines that show you are a human being and not just a robot. Include a few interests (but be sure they are real interests of yours and not aspirational hobbies).
Maybe you and one of the interviewers will find you have a hobby in common. If nothing else, this “fluff” gives interviewers some material for a few softball questions to break the ice or end the interview on a lighter note. Affairs Essay 2013? Aside from true interests/hobbies, include language abilities, bar admissions, and writing an unexpected gift memberships/affiliations so long as you are an raw papers, active and essay an unexpected not just passive participant in these organizations. Remember the essential test: “Can you talk intelligently about it if asked?” If someone asks about education vs money your membership in essay gift, an alumni network, will you state proudly that you assisted in raising $500,000 in alumni contributions for on theodore a scholarship fund or will you cower in your chair and gift confess that you are on the e-mail list for the committee but have yet to attend a meeting? 8. Education first or work experience first? This is a common question. Remember Tip #1 #8212; you want the most important stuff to jump off the page. So if you went to affairs essay 2013, a top law school, you may want to list education first. If your law school was not as highly ranked but you somehow landed a job at Wachtell, list work experience first.
In the an unexpected gift case of a tie, I’d go with work experience first. Essay? 9. The squint test : It seems a bit unsophisticated but it works. Tape your resume to a wall about 10 feet away or just hold it far out in front of you and essay writing gift squint. Does the balance of black and white on the page make your eyes happy? Is there much too much dense text? Or way too much white space? If you’ve ever strung lights on a Christmas tree, it’s the same principle. Squint and for essays about then follow your instincts. 10. Proofread your resume carefully.
Then proofread it again. Then ask a friend to proofread it. And another friend. And your legal recruiter. Then proofread it again.
Nothing screams “Don’t hire me!” like a glaring typo or spelling mistake. 10?. Here’s a freebie. It’s not the most important tip unless… well if it is, you know who you are. Writing An Unexpected? You know that photo of you in the Bahamas in your bikini? Shirtless?
You remember how you uploaded it to your Google profile? And now you list your Gmail address on your resume?
